EM Core Materials:

 

The laminated electrical steel magnetic core of an electric machine (EM) is necessary for focusing the magnetic path to at least the air-gap, reducing winding size, and reducing eddy current and hysteresis core losses, which represent 15% of the total loss of any EM.  

 

 

Note: Material or structural improvement (i.e., packaging techniques) to the laminated electrical steel core, such as reducing the core loss, increasing the magnetic saturation limit, thinning the lamination, increasing the resistivity, reducing hysteresis, or increasing the permeability of electrical steels, is a major limiting factor of improving EM efficiency, reducing stator armature size, and increasing lamination packing density.

 

 

Improve the magnetic properties of the core material (i.e., electrical steel):

Nanocrystalline or amorphous material can reduce core loss, such as eddy and hysteresis losses, by up to 80% over conventional electrical steel laminations but the unusual mechanical properties of these materials have made EM manufacturing difficult or impractical until the patented Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) 3D Printer (called MotorPrinter), which was leveraged by Best Electric Machine (BEM) to manufacture axial-flux (or disk shape) electric machine and high frequency transformer cores.

 

Increase the flux density saturation limits of electrical steel:

Electrical steel manufacturers are using material science to increase the saturation flux density limit beyond 1.5T but any material science that improves magnetic performance of the core materials also make manufacturing difficult or impractical without MotorPrinter.
